Why Plant Health Care is Essential for Mississippi Landscapes

April 13, 2025

A Quiet Warning in the Yard

Imagine stepping out onto your front lawn. The sweetgum tree you planted a decade ago isn’t looking so good—its leaves are wilting, a few branches are brittle, and strange fungi are creeping up from the roots. You water regularly, trim occasionally, and even fertilise last spring. So what happened?

The answer lies in a crucial yet often overlooked approach to outdoor care: Plant Health Care (PHC). Especially in a place like Mississippi, where unpredictable weather and challenging soils affect everything that grows, proactive plant health services can make the difference between a thriving landscape and a costly disaster.

At Pelton’s Tree and Land Services, Inc., we’ve spent over 25 years helping homeowners and commercial property owners in Gautier and the Gulf Coast region keep their trees and plants strong, vibrant, and safe. Let’s dig in—literally and figuratively.

Understanding Plant Health Care: More Than Just Maintenance

Plant Health Care (PHC) is not just trimming branches or pulling weeds. It’s a systematic, science-based approach to supporting your landscape’s well-being. Think of it like going to a doctor for annual checkups—except for your trees, shrubs, and soil.

Here’s what a professional PHC program often includes:

PHC Component Purpose
Soil Testing Measures pH, nutrients, and microbial activity
Deep Root Fertilization Delivers nutrients directly to root zones
Disease & Pest Monitoring Catches issues early before they become irreversible
Pruning for Health Removes infected, dead, or structurally weak branches
Irrigation Assessment Ensures water is reaching the root zones without pooling or runoff issues

Instead of reacting when a tree looks sick, PHC focuses on prevention, resilience, and longevity.

Mississippi’s Landscape Challenges: Climate, Soil & Stress

Mississippi is a beautiful state to call home—but it’s not always kind to plant life. The Gulf Coast brings high humidity, heavy storms, scorching summers, and clay-dominant soil, all of which can strain even the healthiest trees.

Some key environmental stressors include:

  • Clay soils that hold water and suffocate roots

  • Salt intrusion near coastal areas

  • Sudden temperature drops in winter

  • Frequent pest cycles (especially during mild winters)

Without proactive care, trees and shrubs suffer from fungal infections, nutrient deficiencies, and insect infestations. Over time, the damage becomes visible—and irreversible.

Common Threats to Tree & Plant Health in Mississippi

Many Mississippi property owners don’t realize their trees are under attack until it’s too late. Here are some frequent threats we see:

Fungal Diseases

  • Anthracnose causes leaf blotches and premature drops.

  • Root rot fungi thrive in oversaturated soils.

  • Oak wilt spreads quickly through vascular systems.

Invasive Pests

  • Emerald ash borer destroys ash trees rapidly.

  • Pine beetles tunnel into the bark, disrupting the nutrient flow.

  • Bagworms can strip evergreens in weeks.

Nutrient Deficiencies

  • Yellowing leaves could signal a lack of iron or nitrogen.

  • Poor soil quality in new developments is a silent killer.

Mechanical Damage

  • Broken limbs from storms

  • Lawn equipment wounds to the bark

  • Poor pruning jobs that weaken branch structures

The Benefits of Proactive Plant Health Care

So why invest in PHC if everything “looks fine”? Because prevention is always cheaper—and safer than cure.

For Homeowners:

  • Curb appeal that stands out in the neighborhoods

  • Increased property value through mature, healthy trees

  • Safer yards for pets and kids

  • Less money spent on emergency removals or replacements

For Commercial Property Owners:

  • Professional appearance that builds trust with tenants or customers

  • Fewer liability risks from falling limbs or unsafe trees

  • Lower long-term landscaping costs through prevention

  • Reliable PHC scheduling with local experts like Pelton’s

Here’s a quick breakdown of the benefits:

Boosts Landscape Appearance

When to Act: Signs Your Landscape Needs Plant Health Help

You don’t need a forestry degree to spot early warning signs. If you notice any of these, it’s time to bring in the pros:

  • Sudden leaf drop outside of autumn

  • Discoloration (yellowing, browning, spotting)

  • Dead or brittle limbs

  • Fungi or mushrooms around the base of a tree

  • Bark cracking or peeling

  • Pests crawling around the trunk or leaves.

Don’t wait for visible damage to appear—by then, the tree could be beyond saving.

Winter storms can be a beautiful sight. But for trees, snow and ice are more than just a temporary inconvenience. While we admire the winter wonderland outside, many of us don’t realize the heavy toll that snow can take on our trees. Branches snap under the weight, trunks crack, and in some cases, entire trees can be uprooted, leaving your yard and property at risk. In regions like the Mississippi Gulf Coast , snow may not be an everyday concern, but when it does occur, whether it’s a rare snowstorm or an icy mix, it’s important to be prepared. A well-maintained tree can endure the challenges of winter, while an unprepared one may become a safety hazard, causing property damage and even potential injury. Let’s explore how snow and ice affect trees, the steps you can take to protect them before and after a storm, and how Pelton’s Tree and Land Services can help you care for your trees to ensure they stay safe and healthy all winter long. How Snow & Ice Damage Trees When snow and ice accumulate on tree branches, the weight can cause significant damage. Even a light dusting of snow can add considerable weight, but heavy snow or ice storms put much more strain on trees, particularly those with weaker structures or unhealthy limbs. The Weight of Snow and Ice The primary cause of damage during winter storms is the sheer weight of snow and ice that accumulates on tree limbs. As snow piles up, branches bend under the pressure. If the snow is wet and heavy, the weight can be even greater, increasing the likelihood of branches snapping or breaking off completely. Trees with weak or brittle limbs , especially those in urban or suburban landscapes, are especially vulnerable. Branch Breakage When tree branches bend too far under the weight of snow, they can snap, causing lasting damage to the tree. In some cases, the limb may be damaged to the point that it cannot regenerate, requiring removal. Multiple-stem trees , such as maples or birches, are more prone to these kinds of issues. If the central leader (the main stem) is weakened, the entire tree may be at risk. Damage to Trunks and Roots In addition to branch damage, extreme cold, combined with the freezing and thawing of water, can cause frost cracks in tree trunks. This damage, although less visible than broken limbs, weakens the tree over time, making it more susceptible to disease. The ground around trees can also freeze and thaw, resulting in root heaving , where roots are lifted out of the soil, reducing the tree’s ability to absorb water and nutrients. Not All Trees Are Equally Vulnerable Some trees are naturally better equipped to handle heavy snow and ice. Trees with flexible branches, like pines and firs, are less likely to break under snow’s weight, while trees with brittle or dense wood, like oak or beech, are more at risk. In addition, young trees or trees with shallow roots may struggle to stand up to the pressure. In the Gulf Coast , while snow isn’t an annual concern, ice storms can still lead to significant damage, particularly in unexpected winter events. Being prepared can help minimize potential damage to your trees.
